sites & excavations
Surrounding the Aegean Sea and extending from the Balkan Peninsula into the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece played anything but a marginal role in the archaeology, history and cultural development of the Ancient Near East. The investigation of cultures such as the Minoan, the Mycenaean and (probably) that of the Sea Peoples have clearly revealed this truth, such revelation arising from the excavation of a number of key sites around the Aegean.
(Recognising that Greece is also the homeland of Classical Mediterranean civilisation, this page restricts its focus to those sites dating to the Bronze and Early Iron Ages).
